listography – top 5 songs I grew up to

tough list, just 5 songs, 5.

1. un elefante

this is the first song that i can really remember singing time and time again. i was a spanglish baby and this is from when i lived in the sunshine. i make my many apologies and my excuses now in advance for what you are about to experience. the words are below if you care to join me.

mira bien ahi en el techo que vas

es un gran animal con bicicleta vas

es un elefante que yo voy a pensar

con su tronco delante y su colita detras

 2. then we came to england. i spent most of my easter holidays with my english grandparents, minnie & tommy hurley. they had a caravan in east sussex, not far from rye, in a place called pett level. we spent many happy years on that stretch of coast. a coast i will always love. minnie & tommy are eastenders, and boy did they love a sing song. this is just one of many songs that we would sing on our way down to caravan, with a bag of cough candies, we never had coughs though?

3. out of my parents group of friends they were the first to have a child. they were a sociable bunch and they all liked having parties. where they went i went. i have a distinct memory of blondie and the album parallel lines. still a favourite of mine to this day.

4. often in the summer holidays my parents would take 3 or 4 weeks off, from doing those things that bank managers and carpenters do, and we would all hop in the car and drive. not always a plan. just maybe a final destination and pretty much whatever came our way in between. this is where i was introduced to stars on 45. good holiday car music.

5. i move swiftly onto 1982, when i had my first very misguided crush. i was in love with boy george. i know, i know, you can stop laughing now. the album kissing to be clever, got a lot of airtime in our house!

so i’ve only made it to 8 years of age before i got to number 5, damn i have so many more, can i have 5 more please?

πŸ˜€ hee hee ok 1. You clearly have a future in show business and 2. I always thought Boy George was a girl when I was a child. Mmmm. Anyhows, great list missus. No. 1 is clearly THE BEST! πŸ˜‰

A very eclectic list (and number 1 is brilliant – it’s a yes from me!) I had a crush on George Michael. Georges in the 1980s were a very bad idea. Now I’m all about George Clooney.

Ha! So glad you put Stars On 45 up πŸ™‚ I played them at work recently, we made a ‘bad Beatles’ playlist (including any solo songs) and obviously I included the 12″ version…

It also gives me fond memories driving back from seeing Oasis at Maine Road in the 90’s, and we stuck my mum’s tape on in the car – and we STILL knew the order of the songs πŸ™‚

I can remember very earnest arguments on the playground about whether Boy George was a man or a woman – I was about 8 at the time. I would love to see the next five songs on your list!
