romeria

there doesn’t have to be much reason in spain to have a fiesta however la romeria is quite a biggy in fiesta second to carnival time.

a romeria you say? well it comes from the word “romero” meaning travelling towards rome. it’s a catholic celebration, a pilgrimage that in today’s world is a procession, of floats, music and dancing, food and cattle! to translate in a very simple way it’s kind of spains harvest festival. the celebration lasts all day long, and why wouldn’t it?!

whilst we were recently in tenerife i took Mr HPMcQ to see his first romeria, and we went to la laguna, my mothers hometown.

everyone was dressed in their traditional local dress, and they sang and danced/walked through the old streets of la laguna, drinking and eating as they go on their way. many floats had built-in bbq’s on the back, and all of them handed out gifts of their produce be it food and/or wine. Mr HPMcQ was most impressed with his sangria, but less so with his boiled egg. the processions always end at a sanctuary, a hermitage or a church and the night always ends it a big party in the town square.
