so this weeks theme is planes, trains and automobiles
one of the most popular juvenile rides, with an interesting history. in 1943 parliament passed an act which finally recognised pneumoconiosis in miners and a large amount of miners in wales had been suffering badly from the condition. the chairman of austin motors built a factory in south wales and he employed the disabled men to build the pedal cars as he felt that they should be given the opportunity to earn a wage. the toy car, which was known as the auston j40, had been designed so that it could be operated by a child and would have room for a sibling and should have an opening bonnet and boot, they were built using scrap sheet steel from the austin factory, they had dummy engines but real spark plugs!
the carter austin car ride is thought to have been built around 1955
