it’s a bridge in berlin, and they are love locks. they started appearing across europe in the 2000’s. it’s a custom where sweethearts engrave a heart and attach to a public gate or fence.

they are all over the place some really gorgeous stories behind some too. there’s a bridge in serbia, now named the bridge of love. story goes back to before world war II. a local schoolmistress had fallen in love with a serbian officer. he was sent to war in greece, where in fell for a local woman from corfu. the schoolmistress broke their engagement and she never recovered from and died of heart break.young local girls wanted to protect their own loves, so they started engraving their names together with their loved ones on padlocks and affixed them to the railings of the bridge where the school mistress and her officer used to meet.

all over the place, some cities have built purpose structures for people to padlock to. Moscow has a bridge full of trees with love locks on them. Really gorgeous.

I’ve seen something on tv recently where they left locks on a bridge. Can’t remember the film though. I thought at the time what a lovely thing to do.

Lovely photo. I think it is a touching tribute – thanks for sharing. I’d read somewhere that they were actually going to remove the padlocks on the Ponte Milvio to take care of the bridge.
